Could Ulva be repopulated? That’s the hope of North West Mull Community Woodland Company, which is leading a community buy-out bid for the island.
The sale of the island by owner Jamie Howard has been halted by Scottish ministers to allow bid, which would be part-financed by public funds from the national-lottery-backed Scottish Land Fund, which gives residents rights to buy local land, forests and buildings.
The community plan for the island would resurrect the island’s farm, build new homes and focus on eco-tourism – doubling residents to 10 in five years and to 20 in a decade.
