Isle of Erraid

Author Robert Louis Stevenson spent time on Erraid, and the island is one of the locations featured in his novel Kidnapped, where hero David Balfour is shipwrecked.

The island – which can be reached on foot at low tide from neighbouring Knockvologan – lies near Fidden, Fionnphort. It was a lighthouse keepers’ community for almost 100 years until the 1950s, serving as a shore station for the Dubh Artach and Skerryvore lighthouses, 15 and 28 miles away, designed by Stevenson’s father and uncle.

Granite from the island was quarried and pieced together here for the 120-ft Dubh Artach lighthouse.

Bought by a Dutch family in 1977, Erraid is now home to volunteers from custodians the Findhorn Foundation, the Moray-based spiritual community.

Please note: Erraid is a private island. Please respect the community living there. Also, access to the island is tidal, so watch you are not cut off.

Fidden, opposite Erraid, is a lovely spot for a picnic.
