Traigh Mhor self catering cottage offers comfy and cosy Isle of Mull accommodation for holidays. We're not perfect ... we don't have en-suites or the latest HD television or wi-fi. However, our old croft does offer great views and lots of character, as well as a homely, warm welcome.
But don't just take our word! Read what our guests say about their stay. Here's a selection...
"Many thanks for the use of your lovely cottage. We loved it and would recommend it to anyone."
Len and Leonora Palmer, Essex, June 2010
"People say you shouldn't return a second time to a place that you had such a good first experience in as it won't live up to your recollection and memories. We were not disappointed though. A year after our first visit, we felt as if we had just been out for a long walk when we came into the cottage."
Neil and Annie Woodward, North Yorkshire, May 2010
"We had a wonderful time on Mull this last week. The cottage is truly a home from home – the kitchen is so well equipped and even though we have an oil-fired cooker at home, it was nice to have the flexibility of electric!
"We managed to get over to Iona twice and were lucky enough to see a wild stag and a seal which came out onto the landing jetty at Fionnphort (thanks to a friendly fisherman who threw out some of his catch!). Best of all – no midge bites! We’re looking forward to visiting again soon."
Michelle Vincent, North Yorkshire, May 2010
"By a long way the most delightful and well-equipped holiday house we have ever visited. Quite wonderful and a perfect situation. We had a memorable week and hope to come again. Thank you for all the thoughtful details."
Peter and Bridget Findlay, Hampshire, May 2010
"It felt like borrowing a home as opposed to hiring a self-catering cottage. The place is very well equipped and we have been extremely comfortable. We have been very lucky with the weather and have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the area - which is wonderful!"
Gill and Rick Thompson, Solihull, May 2010
"We had a fantastic time at Traigh Mhor, it was a wonderful place to stay. Mull was a magical place to get married. We will never forget our time there."
Dylan and Ann Thomas, Gwynedd, April 2010
"For us, Traigh Mhor was utterly perfect. We couldn’t believe the view from the kitchen window when we woke up on that first morning. The cottage was so comfortable and gave us a really relaxing break. Beautifully appointed. Everything was perfect. We were lucky with the weather too and your notes for the surrounding area were great, giving us a chance to explore. We really hope to be back."
Polly Cameron, Inverdruie, Aviemore, November 2009
"Your cottage is fantastic and we enjoyed every moment of our week. The kitchen was a haven for us and the open fire was a real treat. It’s a great place and we’d definitely recommend it to others. We’re already working out when we can return."
John and Lucy Muir, Fife, November 2009
"We had a fantastic week on Mull and staying at Traigh Mhor added massively to the whole experience. It's a truly fabulous cottage with first class facilities in a superb location and we genuinely hope to visit again one day."
Andrew Lewis, Lancashire, October 2009
"Two weeks after our wonderful stay in Traigh Mhor I just wanted to let you know that we all liked it very much, the house and the area were perfect for hiking and photo making. Sure the weather was quite temperamental, however it was a delight making this trip in the north to your place."
Carmen and Erik/ Henk and Janny, Cheshire, September 2009
"We've been holidaying on Mull since 1972 (I think we've missed 2 years!!). We've stayed in several different cottages and liked them all but yours is by far the best in every way-- superb kitchen, I cook and I know a good kitchen when I meet one; VERY comfortable
beds and bedrooms; excellent bedding; lovely lounge; great bathroom facilities, even with 6 adults there was never a queue; great laundry too (though I still crave a washing line) and the great view as you wash up."
Alison Reed and family, Wiltshire. June-July 2009
"The cottage was the best we have stayed in without doubt, in over 20 years of holidays in Scotland. Excellently equipped – especially the kitchen. We felt very welcome and at home there."
Neil and Annie Woodward, North Yorkshire. May 2009
"We had a great holiday in a truly amazing location. Everything was just perfect. Hope to be back in a couple of years time."
Jane, Mark, Sarah and Emily Appleby, Somerset. April 2009
"We have stayed, over the years, in quite a large number of west coast holiday homes - we own one ourselves in Tighnabruaich. I can think of very few that match up to the warmth and welcome offered by yours.
"We both fell in love with your beautiful home. It was such a joy, out walking every day, in rain and shine, to know that it would be there waiting to comfort us on our return, and we found we were looking forward to the returns more and more, especially the bath - bliss having one so big. The kitchen, too, was a joy to use, and exceptionally well equipped, and a whisky by a peat fire in the evening finished many a grand day. We felt very blessed at being allowed to share such a special place, with all the wonderful views around."
Michael Holton, East Lothian. February 2009
“It was so lovely to see Mull in the winter ... the colours etc really give it a different (but equally lovely) character. We managed a quick dip just along from Scoor on new year’s day. It was a bit brisk if I’m honest… although still not much colder than in the summer! It already feels like an eternity since we were there; I work as a driving instructor in Newcastle and all this week I’ve found myself yearning for a passing place or two.
"The cottage was fantastic – very comfortable and cosy, and we felt instantly at home. I’m so glad we’re already booked for the summer!”
Phil Reed, Newcastle. New Year 2008/09
"Just returned from a great week on Mull - made all the better by the amazing weather we had up there! We didnt' see any rain until Friday! The cottage was great - really well equipped and warm."
Dave and Fiona Harniess, Manchester. November 2008
"We arrived home safely yesterday after a fab holiday despite the awful weather. We saw herons and eagles we think! We would have liked to go to Iona but the weather was against us. We all loved your cottage and would love to return one day when the sun is shining."
The Lake Family, Edinburgh. October 2008
"We really loved the cottage - it was the perfect setting with gorgeous views from every window. The whole setting was very relaxing, the cottage is lovely inside, and we enjoyed all the facilties - games box, despite being blessed with gorgeous weather, was utilised!
"We loved the island even more than the previous time - walking around the the local headland, fish and chips at Tobermory, walking and swimming on Iona and walking over to the Arches of Carsaig where we even saw golden eagles! Wonderful."
Sarah Gent, Durham. September 2008
“The cottage was the highlight of our holiday. We had a fantastic stay. We loved the Esse – it’s warm welcome and usefulness. The cottage feels very homely. Thanks!”
The Windell family, Somerset. August 2008
“Thank you for the lovely cottage and the thought with which you have prepared it for our stay. We enjoyed it very much.”
Paul and Fiona Taylor and family, Derbyshire. August 2008
“We’ve been coming to Scotland ‘en famille’ for many years and have become very familiar with rental cottages. We all felt Traigh Mhor to be the nicest, most comfortable and welcoming cottage we’ve stayed in. It felt like a family home from home rather than just a commercial let. Thank you for your hospitality. We do feel unwound!”
The Lawson Family, Derbyshire. July 2008
“Mull was wonderful and Traigh Mhor was idyllic. We absolutely adored it - like a home from home. The Argyll Arms was a welcome haunt on the evenings we couldn't be bothered to cook - although your kitchen was a pleasure to cook in, so well equipped and such lovely views.
“The weather was fantastic for us … how spectacular are those beaches!”
Natasha Leithgoe and family, Lancashire. July 2008
“We had a fantastic time in Mull and the cottage was perfect! Suffice to say we felt you had thought of everything and couldn't find any faults - wonderful.
“I can't believe a place as beautiful as Mull exists only 3 hours from my house - we'll be back many times I would guess. Thank you for letting us into the Mull secret!"
Angela Rodwell, East Dunbartonshire. July 2008
“On the naval charts in the kitchen it’s described as ‘White house with black roof’. But to us, and now the children, Traigh Mhor is a home from home.
“I have been extremely lucky to have been visiting the cottage for nearly 30 years, sometimes more than once a year, and have watched its carefully nurtured changes over that time. Sympathetic extension, central heating, double glazing, the new kitchen and appliances … but the one thing that has never changed is the warm, homely, feeling I get when I enter our home from home.
“I know my children feel the same, so let’s hope that they will return the favour, and take me on holiday to the cottage when I get too old to drive – not for some time yet I would hasten to add.
“Kari, Toby we wish you well, and I look forward to the next 30 years!”
David and Hazel Coleman and family, Shropshire. August 2008
"We have been using Traigh Mhor as a base for exploring Mull for 20 years and the joy of staying there has always been an important part of our Mull 'experience'.
"Apart from being superbly situated to explore the wonderful beaches and for walking in the wild places of Mull, it is close enough to Bunessan for supplies - but far-enough away to allow us to feel remoteness; such an antidote to the bustle of southern life.
"The family have created a holiday sanctuary where time can seem to stand still. The cottage retains echoes of the original crofters who once lived there - whitewashed walls and bare stone - whilst managing to provide the necessities of the 21st century.
"After a day's exploring, it is lovely simply to sit in their warm kitchen, but still to feel connected with the untamed landscape beyond the large windows, as the sun lingers on the rugged sides of the distant mountain of Burg. It is as if the rest of the world does not exist. Pure magic!"
Vanya Body, Duncan Short and family, Wiltshire
"If like me you live quite close to London, Mull is a very long way away, but it is worth it. A feeling of excitement hits you when you drive onto the ferry at Oban and when, on the way to Traigh Mhor, you drive along the shores of Loch Scridain at Pennyghael it’s almost like coming home.
"The sight of the Dutchman’s Cap far out at sea, in silhouette like a supertanker, tells you you’re nearly there.
"I have been fortunate enough to have spent 6 holidays at Traigh Mhor and each has been thoroughly enjoyable. It is a great base from which to explore Mull and its outlying islands, to bird watch and to sample the fantastic seafood. A local creel caught langoustine is the finest shellfish money can buy and even those bought from the trawlers on the quay at Bunessan (or Fionnphort) are delicious. It is also possible to get crabs, lobsters, oysters and squat lobsters too.
"Inside Traigh Mhor, there is something very comforting whilst lying in bed in an upstairs bedroom about the sound and sight of the sea.
"The beaches are superb: white sand, clear water, large rock pools and the shrimping is great fun. Many-a-time we have come back from Knockvologan or Ardalanish with winkles, whelks, prawns, shrimps and razor clams (known as ‘spoots’ in Scotland) to eat for tea – a real Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall adventure. The water is COLD but I have managed to swim, diving for rocks in the crystal waters of Knockvologan at high tide watched by one incredulous seal.
"The Ross of Mull is wonderful – you really should visit."
Marcus Titley, Suffolk, U.K.
